Passing out parade, KOYLI, Strensall, 9th August, 1954, Pete Jackson on extreme right, Johnson, Harriss, Burton, Child 03. The M.V. Georgic left Liverpool Friday November 9th, enroute for Kenya, on board,there came on board a battalion of The Rifle Brigade, and The Inniskillings, life on board was ruled by The Ships R.S.M, no ammo boots to be worn while on board ship!!! we in the signal platoon were busy getting classified, life like the food on board, was first class. 04. Saturday morning in Nanyuki camp Kenya, we lived in four man tents no electric power on site, one paraffin lamp per tent, beds were as follows, two pieces of 3x2 timber 2feet 6 inches long laid on top of them three planks of timber 10inches by 1inch by 6 feet long, upon which was placed a palliass stuffed with as much grass as you could find and cut no pillows provided, two blankets plus your regulation green blanket to keep you warm, we were issued with blue rayon pyjamas in lieu of sheets,and given a warning to look out for snakes and spiders in the tents. 05. My tent mate Clff Barnard who taught me how to play Solo, we played non stop once the sun had gone down, and that was around 6pm ,there was no twilight on the equator, it was like turning off a light. 08. Taken in Nanyuki camp, top pic, bottom row a group of Kipsigie trackers we showed them out radio sets, there eyes were popping like organ stops when they heard the voices coming through the ear phones. George Johnson with ciggie Jonesy standing at the back Cliff Barnard all of the signal platoon, sad to say Jonesy had a very bad accident shortly after this was taken, he was detailed for an ambush and was given the trip flare to carry he put it in his map pocket of his slacks, he decided to remove it and unfortunately he pulled the pin to extract the flare from his pocket, the flare ignited while still in his slacks then burned through and stuck in his gaiters, did you ever use a flare?? he was taken away to Nairobi BMH we heard he lost a leg but never heard of him again. 09. Pete Jackson, light infantry signaller Mk 1, with .303 Lee Enfield Mk 5 jungle carbine, with 50 rounds and bayonet, water bottle, 46 mobile radio set, with battery,mobile rod areal, ear phones and throat mike, you can see why the Mau Mau were nervous. 10. On the slopes of Mt Kenya this tree house called Cloud Cottage was located near a salt lick and water hole, on the way down we spent a night inside the wire compound surronded by lion, buffaloe, elephant and Rhino, all taking turns at drinking the water and licking the salt, there were numerous deer there too,but no killing, 11. Alexander Wanderi, Kipsigi tracker, and myself somewhere in the cedar forests on Mt Kenya 12. This was the view of Mt Kenya from our base camp we were well above the bamboo line this area was called the moorland, we stayed here for several weeks fed by air drops of A.B.C.and D compo rations and tins of 100 proof rum, to keep us warm at night, when we had worked our way half way down the mountain looking for the mau, we were met by a mobile shower unit and took a hot shower and a real meal of fresh grub. 12a, On the left is Major Macathie C.O. B coy, on the left Captain Peter Sibbald, in the middle is a police plane approaching the camp to drop us our mail, on this run he lost his plane door, the air waves were glowing with his comments. 14. I was on lookout awaiting a food drop perched on a rock with the radio set tuned to the plane when I noticed a commotion going on around me when I looked around there was a herd of Fox George Rogers, (signal jargon for F###$$& great elephants) I beat it back to the tent grabbed my camera and took these shots as they ambled by they hung around all day and into the night some bright spark suggested firing a very pistol at night to scare them off this he did, but he fired it horizontal instead of vertical and so there was started a large grass fire the elephants ambled off as we spent most of the night beating out the fire !! 15. The view down the Nanyuki valley at an elevation of 10,000ft, from our base tent camp, it froze the water at night but it was still warm enough to go without shirts during the day. 16. Pte Jackson Lcpl Bob Jones and Pte Bill Smith on firewood gathering detail, in foothills of the Aberdaires, fire places had had been built in the officers mess, sergeants mess and the naafi tent. 19. Myself outside the signal tent at Setons Farm ready to go out on patrol, it was mostly ambush work apart from Buffaloe and Rhino walking into the ambushes we never had any luck with the Mau Mau. 20. This was the company O.R.s canteen. McGregor I.C, N,A.A.F.I. decided to use up a lot of bamboo that was growing around the place. Because of the food situation or the lack of, the company consumed bars of Cadburys chocolate as fast as it arrived on the ration truck, warm Pepsi and warm Tusker ale to wash it down. No electricity in, there was rumbling in the ranks and not only their stomachs!! The C.Q.M.S laid out the rations that a British Soldier is entitled to while on active service, it wasnt a lot and I can still recall being told we were entiltled to, 21. in the company camp Mt Kenya pic taken of the signal platoon, L / R , L/cpl Bob Jones, Pvts Bill Smith, George Johnston, Eric Pearce, kneeling Pete Jackson. 22. on the banks of the Nanyuki river,Slopes of Mt Kenya, we built our own bath house, if any one wanted a bath it was a case of pick up two mates in the same state and take an axe to cut the wood to put on the fire to heat the water to take a bath or just go straight into the river that came from the glaciers on Mt Kenya a mile or two away, Bill Smith and myself waiting for the water to heat up 23.Myself on board The T.S. Dilwara, heading to Aden this is around november 55, this was a troop ship and very basic three tiered troop decks limited air conditioning totally unlike the M.V. After WWII, it was decreed that all Infantry Regiments would be reduced to 1 Battalion each. In April 1948, 1st KOYLI (51st) left Minden and returned to England, where they were disbanded. 2nd KOYLI (105th) were in Malaya, and on 18 November 1948 they were officially renamed 1st KOYLI (51st-105th). The first was V2 Steam Locomotive 60872, which was scrapped after being withdrawn from service, and the second was Deltic Locomotive 9002/55002 which was preserved at the National Railway Museum in York. V2 Steam Locomotive 60964 and Deltic Locomotive 9017/55017 were named after our Sister Regiment "The Durham Light Infantry" Many thanks to "The Chronicles of Napier" website for allowing the use of some of their material. His Memorial Headstone was found recently, in a state of disrepair, and broken at the base, in St Michaels Churchyard at Brodsworth. Following a donation by Percy Potts (ex KOYLI) and work carried out by Pete(Doc)Shields (ex KOYLI) and his group, the Headstone has now been caringly restored and cleaned. ]]> Sun Feb 8 2009 The Rifles, The King's Division & The Queen's Division Passing Out Parade @ Catterick Garrison, On 6th February 2009 http://koyli.fotopic.net/c1649972.html It was a VERY cold day, but Reg Humphreys KOYLI, Les Parkin KOYLI, Alan Yates KOYLI and Jim Smith KOYLI got well wrapped up. We forgot the cold when we heard the stirring music of the band, and the Rifles marched on at 160 paces per minute, as opposed to the more sedate pace of the KINGS & QUEENS Divisions. A very nice day, Thanks to Reg and his sturdy car. Saturday 7 February 2009: It was a VERY cold day, but Reg Humphreys KOYLI, Les Parkin KOYLI, Alan Yates KOYLI and Jim Smith KOYLI got well wrapped up. I wish there had been some buglers on parade, but as it is a Corps Band, no buglers - Arghh 19. With their flowing winter greatcoats, spurs on their heels, and excellent music.
